The collection contains correspondence, 1813-1859, of John White Nash (1792-1859), lawyer and judge of Amelia and Cumberland counties, Va., owner of "Red Hill" plantation, Powhatan County, Va., and a member of the Virginia General Assembly. Subjects of the correspondence include Nash's law practice, in particular the filing of pension claims on behalf of Virginia veterans of the United States Continental Army; African-American slaves; the education of women; the estates of explorer William Henry Ashley of St. Louis, Mo., Nancy Ashley Steger, and Ludwell Brackett of Cumberland County, Va.; and land in Cooper County, Mo. Also, includes Nash's account books (7 vols.), 1804-1848, loose accounts, other financial records, and numerous reconstructed legal case files. Also, includes correspondence, 1821-1844, accounts, and other financial records of Abner Nash (1797-1844), physician of Amelia and Cumberland counties, Va.; correspondence, 1878-1889, and miscellaneous records of Francis Smith Nash (b. 1854), a surgeon in the United States Navy; and miscellaneous papers of other members of the Nash family.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff.
